Microsoft Authenticator
Microsoft Authenticator is a smartphone app that allows sign-in by entering a two-digit verification code from the sign-in screen into the app on your phone and enabling passwordless sign-in. It also supports time-based codes.
Basic setup
- On your computer, open the Security info settings page[1].
Click Add sign-in method.
Select Microsoft Authenticator.
Click Next.
Click Next again.
A QR code will appear on the page, which must be scanned using the app you will install in the following steps.
- On your phone, go to Download Microsoft Authenticator and click Download app[2].
Install and open the Microsoft Authenticator app, then click Add account.
Select Work or school account and then select Scan QR code.
After scanning the QR code on the computer, a verification number will be displayed.
Enter this number on your phone.
Passwordless sign-in
Passwordless sign-in allows you to sign in using a verification code without using a password.
Important:
For passwordless sign-in, a screen lock must be set up (PIN, pattern, fingerprint, or face recognition).
- App already set up
In the app, tap your account and select Passwordless sign-in setup requests.
Continue according to the on-screen instructions (device registration will be required).
- App not set up
- On your phone, go to Download Microsoft Authenticator and click Download app[3].
Install and open the Microsoft Authenticator app, then click Add account.
Select Work or school account and then select Sign in.

Click Next.
Click Next.
Click If you want to pair your account with the app, click this link.
Back in the mobile app, confirm the number.
- Enter the verification code
- If you cannot see the number, click I can’t see the number.
- Done. You can now sign in only by using a verification code without entering a password.
