Teams

Important:

A new version of Teams is now available to users. The new version offers lower hardware requirements and improved performance. The classic version of the application can be used until March 31, 2024, after which Teams will be automatically switched to the new version.

More information is available here.

Microsoft Teams is currently used primarily to support online teaching at FIT.

It is available to all students, employees, and collaborators of the faculty as one of the services included in the university-wide Microsoft 365 solution (formerly Office 365).

The original version of this guide is available in PDF document.

In general, it is not necessary to install any Microsoft 365 applications, as they can be used directly through the web interface with minor limitations.[2]

The service is operated by the CTU Computing and Information Centre (VIC), which also provides its own documentation.

Recommendation

For better content visibility, we recommend changing the page layout. This can be done in the settings:

  1. Click your profile in the upper-right corner.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. In the Layout section, switch to the List layout.

Basic Usage

  1. Sign in to Teams using your CTU username in the format <username>@cvut.cz and your CTU password.[1]
  2. In the left sidebar, select Teams to display the available teams (courses).
  3. To start or support online teaching, find the team corresponding to the course by its course code.
  4. After opening the course team, you will see the General communication channel, which is created automatically for every team and cannot be changed. For general communication, we recommend using this channel.
  5. When entering a course team for the first time, student access requests must first be enabled, see Figure 1.

During course generation, course variants were merged under the main course code.

If you need to separate communication, for example for English-language or combined-study groups, we recommend creating an additional communication channel within the team using the three dots (…) icon next to the team name and selecting Add channel.

Basic Communication

For communication within a course, you can use two primary tools: chat (1) and video conferencing (2).

Video conferencing features include:

  • Recording the live video session (3)
  • Sharing the desktop or a specific application (4)
  • Sharing a presentation (5)
  • Whiteboard – a collaborative drawing board (not included in recordings) (6)

Recorded videos are displayed automatically in the Teams chat as links to Stream (similar to YouTube).

To open the video conferencing interface, click (2) and then click (7) to start the meeting.

From that moment, the session is live and students can join.

A list of connected students is available in the right-hand panel after clicking (8).

The right-hand panel can also be used for text communication (9).

To start recording, click (3).

To share your screen, click (4).
